Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K

A Smaller Stick With a New Foundation

Amazon's latest Fire TV Stick 4K is more than a routine speed bump. It is the first version of the streamer built around Vega OS instead of Android, and the hardware itself is smaller than the previous generation while still targeting 4K televisions.

Power Straight From the Television

The stick can draw power from a television's USB port, cutting down on the cable and outlet clutter behind the screen. Amazon also says it is 20 to 40 percent faster in most tasks than its other 4K streaming devices and televisions, so the compact body is not meant to come with slower navigation.

A Remote That Is Easier to Feel

The redesigned remote has a flat top and rounded underside, an asymmetrical shape meant to make its orientation obvious by touch. A metal Home button and customizable Star button give the most-used controls stronger landmarks, while infrared support can handle compatible televisions and soundbars.

The Vega OS Tradeoff

Vega OS gives Amazon tighter control over the experience, with the company saying more than 2,000 apps joined the platform this year. It also closes the familiar Android sideloading route, a meaningful change for people who used Fire TV as a flexible little app box. The new model is available for $59.99.
