The 3 Series Starts Its Eighth Generation

BMW's next 3 Series keeps the combustion-powered sport sedan alive alongside the new electric i3. Known internally as G50, the eighth-generation model follows an evolutionary path instead of sharing the i3's dedicated Neue Klasse platform. That split lets BMW move its electric lineup forward while preserving a familiar mechanical route for the 3 Series.

Four Cylinders, Six Cylinders, and a Plug

The range is set to include four-cylinder and inline-six gasoline engines, along with a plug-in hybrid. Earlier prototypes have also shown an M Performance version with four exhaust outlets, pointing to a successor for the current M340i. The full M3 will remain a separate performance chapter.

Neue Klasse Influence Without the EV Platform

Although the gasoline car uses different underpinnings, its design has been developing in the same period as BMW's new electric models. Recent near-production sightings show a cleaner face and a modernized interpretation of the classic sedan proportions. The long hood and rear-driven stance still matter here, even as the details change.

BMW is preparing to reveal the new 3 Series tomorrow night in the United States. That debut should settle the final design, model names, and performance figures that remain outside the confirmed powertrain outline.
