Ram Turns Its Truck Identity Into an SUV

The Ramcharger revives a name once used for Ram's truck-based utility vehicle and brings the modern brand into full-size SUVs for the first time. It is intended as a three-row, family-friendly counterpart to the Ram 1500, keeping the towing ability and tougher character that existing truck owners expect.

Shared Bones, Different Attitude

The new SUV will be related to the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and built at the same Warren Truck plant, but Ram does not want the two sitting on a dealer lot as near-duplicates. The Ramcharger is being shaped as the more aggressive, truck-like choice, while the Jeep continues to lean toward polished luxury.

V8s Return to the Center

Ram leadership describes the powertrain range as "more V8-based." A 5.7-liter Hemi is expected to anchor the lineup, with a 6.4-liter option possible above it. An SRT model has already been confirmed, opening the door to a supercharged performance version related in spirit to the Ram 1500 SRT TRX.

Range Extension Without Giving Up the Road Trip

Ram has also confirmed plans for a range-extended option alongside internal-combustion models. That setup would use an engine as a generator while electric motors drive the wheels, offering electric response without making long-distance towing dependent on charging stops. Production begins in 2028, when the Ramcharger will enter a field led by the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition.
