Toyota's Three-Row EV Has to Wait

The battery-electric Toyota Highlander is designed as a seven-seat family SUV, but production has moved to at least the first quarter of 2027. It will now reach buyers as a 2028 model. The delay leaves Toyota's first American-built EV and first three-row EV for the US market waiting a little longer at the factory gate.

Two Batteries and Up to 320 Miles

Limited and XLE trims will offer front- or all-wheel drive. The smaller 77kWh battery targets up to 287 miles, while a 95.8kWh pack can reach an estimated 320 miles in front-wheel-drive form. Inside, three rows accommodate up to seven passengers, backed by a 14-inch center touchscreen, a 12.3-inch driver display, ambient lighting, and charging access throughout the cabin.

A Missing Link in Toyota's EV Lineup

The Highlander EV is meant to occupy a practical space between smaller electric crossovers and larger family haulers. Its timing matters because Toyota is phasing the current Highlander through a transition while demand for roomy three-row vehicles remains strong. Buyers who can wait get a rare combination of mainstream pricing ambitions, familiar Highlander proportions, and fully electric power. For Toyota, getting this launch right matters just as much as getting it out quickly.
