The ID.4 Successor Gets a Familiar Name

Volkswagen's next electric compact SUV will be called the ID. Tiguan, replacing the ID.4 with a name already established by the brand's gasoline bestseller. It is part of VW's move away from numbered EV names and toward electric versions of recognizable model families.

New Lights Behind the Camouflage

The disguised prototypes retain a smooth overall shape, but the lighting is clearly changing. A full-width bar stretches across the front, while rectangular rear lamps differ from both the outgoing ID.4 and the combustion Tiguan. Volkswagen says the electric Tiguan will introduce a completely new design rather than simply changing the badge on the old SUV.

Europe Goes First, America Follows

The ID. Tiguan is planned to launch in Europe early next year and will eventually come to the United States. Details for the US-market model will arrive later. Single- and dual-motor versions and improved range are plausible successors to the ID.4 lineup, but Volkswagen has not yet confirmed the final powertrain choices or battery specifications.

The Full Reveal Is Close

Volkswagen plans to unveil the ID. Tiguan in early October. That presentation should explain how far the replacement moves beyond the ID.4 in range, charging, interior packaging, and technology.
