Volkswagen's Smaller Electric SUV Gets Cheaper

The ID. Cross Trend brings Volkswagen's new compact electric SUV down to €27,995 in Germany, roughly $32,000. It is the entry model beneath versions already open for order at higher prices. Sized close to the gas-powered T-Cross, the ID. Cross is meant to make Volkswagen's electric lineup more accessible without asking buyers to move into a tiny city car.

A Smaller Battery for the Trend

The Trend pairs an 85 kW motor with a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. That pack supports DC charging up to 90 kW, with a quoted 10-to-80-percent time of about 23 minutes. Other ID. Cross versions offer a 52 kWh battery and as much as 427 kilometers, or 265 miles, of WLTP range, but that maximum should not be mistaken for the entry model's figure. The Trend's appeal rests on its lower price and everyday SUV packaging.

Familiar Size, New Digital Cabin

Inside, a 10.25-inch instrument display sits beside a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, and a Retro Display mode can give the gauges a first-generation Golf-inspired look. The flat battery floor helps provide up to 475 liters of storage, slightly more than the T-Cross. Series production is underway in Pamplona, Spain, and the Trend goes on sale in mid-October. It is a practical opening move for Volkswagen's new family of affordable small EVs.
